  • Current Worship Series at Grace Church

Please come worship at Grace as we explore our current worship theme:

    The Savior Comes with Power

A one-of-a-kind star guided the Magi from their far-away home to worship Jesus. Jesus is the one-of-a-kind Savior who shines on us with the brilliance of his love. We use a word from the language of the New Testament to describe this phenomenon: EPIPHANY. On the Day of the Epiphany, January 6, and on the Sundays after the Epiphany, the Bible shows us Jesus revealing himself as our Savior.

Children see the sun as nothing more than an orange circle in the sky, but when they grow up, they understand that the sun is a blazing fire that gives light and warmth to our solar system. On the Sundays in January and February, we will remember that Jesus is much more than a child in a manger. He is the Savior of the world who comes with power.

January 8 & 9—Power to Save the World

After 30 years of quiet preparation, Jesus began his ministry on earth by being baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. At this baptism God the Father publicly acknowledged Jesus as the Savior of the world. At this baptism Jesus began his Savior-work by carrying the sins of the world into the cleansing power of baptism.

January 15 & 16—Power to Lead Us to Follow Him

When Jesus calls people to follow him in faith, he doesn’t wait for an RSVP. He calls us with the power that is implicit in the gospel, the good news about his love. This is the power that compels us to follow him and believe.

January 22 & 23—Power to Convince Us to Serve Him

Jesus’ call to follow him is always a call to serve him and others. But Jesus knows that his call to serve is impossible to accept; who would want to serve when service implies sacrifice and hardship? Jesus changes our hearts with his power and makes us eager to serve.

January 29 & 30—Power to Impress Us with His Authority

The crowds who heard Jesus preach were amazed; unlike their spiritual leaders, Jesus spoke with conviction and he spoke convincingly. Of all the preachers the world has known, only Jesus has power to stand behind what he says and does.

February 5 & 6—Power to Help Us in Trouble

Jesus’ main mission on earth was not to heal physical diseases, but he used his healing power to prove that he also had power to forgive and save. Jesus still exercises this power in our world; every day our hearts beat and our lungs take in air. Life itself is a miracle of his love. The man who took on human form to save us cares about our bodies, life, and health.

February 12 & 13—Power to Show Us Compassion

Jesus knows the weaknesses we feel because of sin. He knows our doubts, our selfish pride, and our know-it-all attitude. He also knows that his power controls everything in our lives, and so he is willing to have compassion on us even in our weakness. With his power we are able to turn from sin and show compassion to others.

February 19 & 20—Power to Reveal Himself as God

What is behind the child born in a manger, the man who walked over the hills of Palestine, the man who endured rejection by his own people? How can anyone follow a man who was humiliated and subjected to death on a cross? Days before he entered Jerusalem to suffer and die, Jesus pulled back the curtain of his humanity and showed three of his followers his majestic and divine power. As we prepare to enter the season of Lent, we remember Jesus’ power and believe that he is the Son of God who goes forth to war!

Worship services are Sundays at 7:45, 9:00, & 10:30 am, and Mondays at 6:30 pm. Guests are always welcome!

  • 2012 Primetimers Bible Class

Primetimers Bible study will be Wednesday mornings, January 4 & 18 and February 1 & 15, from 10:00-11:15 a.m. in the Grace Center Classroom (located at 250 E. Juneau Avenue). The topic will be “Driving the Back Roads: The Amish—in the World, but Not of It.”

Many people enjoy the shops, craft stores, and restaurants when they visit Shipshewana, IN, or Lancaster County, PA. Millions of tourists walk the streets to contribute to the million-dollar industry spawned by the Amish. Few, however, take the time to learn much about them. Instead, they just shrug their shoulders and admit the sights are great and the products are well-made, but none of it makes any sense. We will investigate the whys and wherefores of the Amish. It’s a puzzle to piece together, but if we look at the pieces one by one, we will begin to see what it is that makes this culture exist as it does. Class presenter is Staff Minister Fritz Horn.

Questions? Contact Fritz Horn at 414-271-3006 or fritzjhorn@gracedowntown.org.
