A Daily Battle

There is a daily battle going on inside me. You could even say it as a war: the devil, the world, and my sinful flesh are constantly fighting against me and pulling me to sin. Too often I forget about that struggle, become complacent, and put down my guard. It is unfortunate how easily I can brush aside my sinful life and feel good that I'm better than most people.
This study really helped to refocus me on the importance of identifying sin in my life, fighting it, and asking for forgiveness. Many days I will read a devotion or the Bible, but then I forget about the struggle of the New Man against my Old Adam. Here are some of the main takeaways I feel I can use in my life:
  1. I need to constantly be on guard against my Old Adam and sin in my life. For me this caution needs to start right when I awake and continue until I fall asleep. It should lead me to more frequent self-reflection about my sin and what I can do to combat it.
  2. To help combat sin, I need to be in God's Word more. God's Word can equip me in my daily struggle. I will only win the battle through the help of God.
  3. I need to spend more time reflecting on my sinful life and repenting of my sins. Too often I just brush aside my sins knowing that I am saved through Jesus' perfect life, death, and resurrection. That is not enough - I need to ask for forgiveness of the sins of commission and the sins of omission. .
  4. Holy communion is a tremendous blessing that God gives us not only for forgiveness of suns but also to strengthen our faith for the fight against sin.
Although we know that we will need to struggle daily in this battle for the rest of the our lives, we can take heart knowing that the war is won through Jesus our Savior. This Gospel message should then compel us to to turn away from sin, turn toward righteousness that we have in Christ, and use the tools with which he has equipped us to win the battle.
