Luther’s Catechism Questions #39-43
The Second Commandment

The Second Commandment:
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we do not use his name to curse, swear, lie, or deceive, or use witchcraft, but call upon God’s name in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

What is in a name?

When we hear someone’s name, we naturally think about the things we know about that person – what the person looks like, the things he or she likes to do, and so on.  A name is like a signpost, pointing our minds to everything we associate with the person.  In a similar way, when we speak of God’s name, we aren’t just talking about the sounds of the letters G-o-d.  God’s name brings to mind everything that is true about him.  God’s name recalls everything God has told us about himself in the Bible.
