What Are You Worth?

If you were to put your life up for sale on eBay what would you get?

In March, Ian Usher put his whole life up for sale on eBay. On June 29, when the sale ended, he found out what it was worth: $380,000. He settled for that, but it was about $100,000 less than his target price.

Usher, a 44-year-old Briton who had immigrated with his wife to the city of Perth in Western Australia six years ago, thought he had an ideal setup. He had a nice house in a great location, a good job, a car, a motorbike, a jet ski, a spa and more. What’s more, he had enough leisure time to enjoy those things.

But then his wife of five years dropped a bomb, telling him that she no longer loved him and that she wanted to move on with her life. Usher, who had not seen that coming, was devastated. He had thought they were blissfully happy.

In dealing with the breakup of his marriage, he decided to cash in on all he had and walk away with the clothes on his back and a full wallet. When he decided to sell everything, he meant more than his possessions. His offer included even his friends and his job. (He persuaded his boss to give the successful bidder a two-week trial in filling his job.)

If you were to put your life up for sale on eBay what would you get? More than $380,000? Less? I suppose it depends if your friends are worth anything to anyone besides you J.

Really, what are you worth?

Christians have a better answer for that question than what we can find on eBay. We ask God what we’re worth, and to our relief there is not some awkward silence as we nervously wait for the cha-ching. God says clearly, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19,20).

Specifically, the price of Jesus’ precious blood bought you. Now you belong to God. Satan cannot steal you. Age, even death, cannot corrupt you. Disease cannot belittle you. Sin cannot own you. You belong to God.

That means, you are not for sale.

PRAYER: I am gladly yours, O God of my salvation. Because of my baptism, let me proudly proclaim you as my Father and Jesus as my Brother and the Spirit as my soul mate and Counselor. When I doubt my worth turn me away from my self to the rich treasure of your grace in the blood of Jesus Christ. And help me to live like who I really am, that others may discover a treasure through me. Amen.
