Too Much
Our God doesn't just get by. He overflows.
“My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.” – Psalm 23.
When Jesus miraculously fed the 5,000 with bread and fish, everyone had their fill and there were plenty of leftovers. Out of a little, Jesus makes a lot.
When Job repented of his self-pity and doubt, he ended up blessed with “twice as much as he had before” (Job 42:10). Out of despair, the Lord makes a double blessing.
When God guided his people into the promised land, it wasn’t a postage stamp sized vacant lot that nobody else wanted; it was flowing with milk and honey. Out of a slave nation, God makes a special people with extravagant resources.
Jesus miraculously filled the nets of his disciples so that they needed another boat to bring them in. God instructed Noah to make the ark immensely larger than an 8-person life raft. Those who must confess the same sin, again, God assures he will forgive not just seven times but seventy times seven.
Our God is too much. He doesn’t just get by. He overflows. You might say that our lives are saturated with his blessings. Not only that, but we are surrounded by his goodness and love. When David says in Psalm 23 that God’s goodness and love will “follow,” us, he uses a Hebrew word that literally means “harass.”
Our Good Shepherd just doesn’t give up.
PRAYER: How often I’ve given up on me, Lord Jesus, but you have not. How easily I’ve ignored with complaint your many and various blessings on me, Lord Jesus, but you have kept giving them with a smile. You are too much. And that’s why I love you. That’s why I need you. Might I give to you in the same way? Amen.
