The Top 10 Comparisons between Superman and the Son of Man
Kinda like a Clark Kent. Except better.
“The Man of Steel is Back,” according to the headline in The Daily Planet. That news alone is moving mobs into multiplexes, because as a nation we go ga-ga over our superheroes. Their stories of helping the needy, moral fortitude, and the power to conquer evil draw our interest in a world of exploitation, immorality, and terrorism. But there’s more to the story than a moment of relief and fantasy we find in a movie theater. These virtues are real in the first and last superhero of the ages: Jesus.
Jesus often referred to himself in the Gospels as “the Son of Man,” reminding his followers - and his enemies - that he is not some aloof, otherworldly alien life form checking out the planet earth. He’s here as one of us. A real person like us who is going to save us as one of us. Kinda like a Clark Kent. Except better. With that in mind, ponder for a moment the following comparisons between Superman and Jesus, the Son of Man.
10. Superman can see anything. The Son of Man can see everything.
9. For both the temptation is constant and strong to use their powers for selfish goals.
8. Superman is the creation of a comic strip. The Son of Man is creator of the cosmos.
7. Superman and Clark Kent are the same person. The Son of God and the Son of Man are the same person.
6. Both are most vulnerable where they are most invincible - their passion to help people.
5. Superman can fly. The Son of Man can rise from the dead and ascend into heaven.
4. Superman was sent off by his father as a baby from a planet being attacked by evil. The Son of Man was sent off by his Father to become a baby on a planet being attacked by evil.
3. Superman can get anywhere almost instantly. The Son of Man is everywhere to be with us always.
2. Superman puts on his neatly pressed cape to save people. The Son of Man lost his torn and bloody cloak to save people.
1. Believe this: there will be a sequel; he will return.
PRAYER: You are my hero, Jesus. You have done for me what nobody else can do, by destroying the devil, conquering death, and suffering the curse of sin in my place. Strengthen my faith with your works of power and love, and make me more able and willing to help others. Amen.
