The Spirit Moves Me
Wind is the third person of the triune God.
Your colorful kite gets sucked further up into the sky and tugs ferociously on the string. Hang on tight, now!
The green leaves on the trees clap their applause on a bright day as the boughs bend a little in the breeze. A beautiful day.
With a flick of your wrist you yank on the little chain hanging from the ceiling fan and it begins to spin, and spin faster, and spin faster until your hair starts blowing in the whirlwind of air. It feels nice and cool.
Snap! The American flag hanging on the building across the street waves at you and then snaps again on an unrelentlessly windy day.
The wind moves things. It fills up the sails of a sailboat moving briskly along the waves and pushes winter storms to the north or south. The wind makes things happen. You can’t see it, but you can see its effects. The wind always has an effect.
Wind is the third person of the triune God. Holy Wind. Holy Breath. Holy Spirit. He is God and he moves things, makes things happen, and always has an effect. Sometimes you notice it. Sometimes you don’t.
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going,” said Jesus. “So it is with everyone born of the Spirit” (John 3:8).
The Holy Wind tugs at your soul like a kite and keeps you focused heavenward. Hang on! The Holy Wind cools you off when you’re hot and bothered worrying about what you can’t control. It feels better. The Holy Wind breathes fresh life into your being so that your faith finds inspiration for another task. Rejuvenating!
Notice the wind today and when you do, thank God for the movement of the air, and the activity of the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER: Come, O Holy Spirit, and breathe on your believers to give us new life and new grace. Come, O Holy Spirit, and blow into all the world the saving love of Jesus Christ . Come, O Holy Spirit, and resuscitate the spiritually dead, bringing them to salvation. Amen.
