The Sky Really Is Falling

A lesson from Chicken Little.

Last weekend’s hottest new box office hit resurrects the oldie-but-goodie story of “Chicken Little.” This poor little fella overreacts after an acorn falls on his head and he alarmingly proclaims that the sky is falling. Disney puts a new twist in the story by inserting the ominously terrorizing truth discovered by Chicken Little that the sky really is falling. He and his band of misfit friends must save the world and do it without sending everyone into fatal panic. Quite a challenge, to convince people there’s a deadly problem but keep them calm enough to deal with it appropriately. I can’t wait to see the movie and have a good laugh at such a silly tale.

Wait a minute. Silly is fine for animated movies, but truth be told the sky really is falling. And I’m not talking about the microbits of meteorites that scientists say actually shower our planet at the moment. Jesus said that “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken” (Matthew 24:29) at the moment he returns on Judgment Day.

Please don’t panic!!! Keep reading!!!

The challenge here, much like announcing the pending arrival of a deadly hurricane or planning to deal with a flu pandemic, is to convince people there’s a real problem but keep calm enough to deal with it appropriately.

Maybe we could all use a few lessons from Chicken Little here. Better yet, let’s ask the one who invented Judgment Day, knows the exact time it will take place, and will orchestrate every detail of it before our very eyes. That would be, of course, God himself.

God is not silent when it comes to providing us plenty of important information so that we can plan appropriately for Judgment Day. As a matter of fact, he himself encourages us that we can be prepared to such a degree that we aren’t afraid of anything that could happen on Judgment Day.

To that end, tune in to the Grace MEMO e-mail devotions the next couple of weeks as they treat the topic of Judgment Day with a fresh, fulfilling, and I might say fascinating perspective.

PRAYER: Jesus, you have sounded the alarm with words of warning about the pending day of judgment when you return from heaven. Help us understand the meaning of your words so that we may not be silent but echo the alarm to our own stubborn hearts and to the ears of this world so distracted by the noise of worldliness. Bless our preparations for that great day, giving us wisdom to know your promises, faith to trust that everything will be okay, and devotion to prepare ourselves for what lies ahead. In your saving name we pray. Amen.
