The Seven Deadly Sins of Gilligan's Island

If you think this spoof is a bit too Hollywood and holds entertainment value only, then hang on a moment.

Topics: Devil, Sin, Temptation

“The Seven Deadly Sins of Gilligan’s Island” has circulated on the internet in a variety of guises. It is based on the theory that each of the characters on the island represents one of the seven deadly sins.

PRIDE: The Professor. He’s an annoying know-it-all.

ENVY: Maryann, always jealous of Ginger’s glamour.

LUST: Ginger, obsessed with her own glamour and dressed in skimpy outfits.

GREED: Mr. Howell. Who else takes a trunk of money on a three-hour cruise?

SLOTH: Mrs. Howell. Never lifted a finger to help with any escape plans.

ANGER: Skipper, because he violently hit Gilligan at least once an episode.

GLUTTONY: Skipper. Yes, he’s big enough to embody two deadly sins.

Those are the seven deadly sins. But, that leaves Gilligan. What about Gilligan? Who is he? Easy. Gilligan is the devil. Think about it. He’s always dressed in red and is the reason they can’t escape.

If you think this spoof is a bit too Hollywood and holds entertainment value only, then hang on a moment. Because sin is not some abstract concept. Sin is real and temptation is real and the devil is real. Sin hurts people so it can help to think of sin in terms of people, like the above list.

As far as Gilligan being the devil. Yeah, right! Now, wait a minute. The Bible calls the devil a wolf in sheep’s clothing and says he can disguise himself to look like an angel if he really wants. Point is – the devil is a deceptive liar and won’t usually appear as evil (remember when he talked so nicely to Eve as a friendly creature of Eden?)

So be on your guard. Get a better handle on what sins are most deadly to you. Understand the sin, your weaknesses, and your environment. Be more discerning about circumstances or decisions where evil lurks under the cover of what looks to be harmless or attractive.

Like Gilligan’s Island, rescue for you is always nearer than you think. Grab hold of your Savior Jesus by faith. Get lost in his love. And you won’t be trapped by sin and the devil.

PRAYER: I don’t always understand my sins, Lord. Or maybe I just don’t want to understand them because, well, then I have to deal with them. I don’t understand the devil either, or maybe I just don’t want to understand him because I’m afraid of him. Open my eyes to see my sin and open my heart to believe that you deal with them better than I do. Unveil the masks the devil wears and decode the lies he whispers in my ear, and when I become afraid (and I will) give me courage to stand firm in the faith, trust your promises, and fight valiantly for your glory. Amen.
