Ten Things I Learned from the Miraculous Catch of Fish
At the Sea of Galilee Jesus called Peter, James, and John to be disciples by filling their nets, and their hearts.
10. Jesus, overcrowded on the shore, got in a boat to teach. Sometimes people can hear us better if we’re not in their face.
9. When Jesus calls us to serve his mission, he often appoints us - like he appointed Peter - to do what we’re already good at. We all don’t have to be professional missionaries.
8. Holy mackerel!
7. Disciples catch fish where we least expect to find them. And more than we thought possible.
6. Jesus doesn’t ask for volunteers. “From now on you will catch people.”
5. Jesus calls us on his time schedule, not ours.
4. I feel unworthy. But Jesus calls me to serve anyway because miracles are his specialty. Before he works through me he works in me.
3. Peter left everything and followed Jesus. Others likely benefited financially from the large catch of fish. There’s an even bigger catch for Peter. And for us.
2. Jesus doesn’t say “shape up or ship out,” but “don’t be afraid.”
1. No need to carp about your mission or flounder about wondering if it will be okay. Follow the call of Jesus today. He miraculously produces fish … and fishers of people.
PRAYER: Help us, Lord Jesus, to remember our call to be disciples and followers and fishers of people. Teach us how to help, how to change, and how to voice your love and compassion. When all our efforts seem in vain give us hope, and when we think our charms have become the greatest lures in your kingdom keep us humble - either way, let us catch people for you today and always. Amen.
