Signs of Change
We can't count on gas prices being the same tonight as they were this morning.
Filling up at my local Speedway this morning, I noticed something different between the two most desired liquids at such a service center. I saw the distinction placed very obviously on the big sign towering up into the sky.
The first, and most important, liquid promoted itself as something constant yet continually new. “Always fresh.” That would be the coffee.
The second, and more popular, liquid advertised its fluctuating nature by a new kind of sign. An electronic display, instead of the old-fashioned numbers changed by hand, indicated its price. Over $3.00 per gallon. Gasoline.
That was scary – seeing the new electronic display for the price of gas. What could one conclude other than the horror that gas prices will be increasing so speedily that a single employee won’t be able to change the price quickly enough by hand?! Just click on a screen in the building, and the new price pops up on the sign. It’ll happen so fast perhaps nobody will notice.
But we do. We notice that we can’t count on gas prices being the same tonight as they were this morning. But we can always count on coffee. Always. Fresh.
It made me realize that we can always count on Jesus. He is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He doesn’t promise one thing in the morning and then forget about that promise that evening. He doesn’t offer us forgiveness and then bail out because it became too complicated. He doesn’t need to update his security settings or perform maintenance on his skills because of such wear n’ tear.
Jesus is always, yet he is also “fresh.” He’s always forgiving, always listening, always reassuring, always noticing, always there but never stale. Never obsolete. Never outdated. His mercies are new every morning. His blessings are there for us to discover as if we were the first to do so. His answers to prayer address our particular needs for that particular day.
So don’t worry. Jesus is still the same Jesus who died for you. He hasn’t posted a message for you on some electronic billboard but in the timeless truths of the Bible. Look there for what is constant and sure.
PRAYER: Savior Jesus, give me an unwavering faith in your constant love and forgiveness. Be my rock and my refuge, my stronghold and shield. When my life changes so quickly that I can’t keep pace, be there like you were yesterday and will be forever. Amen.
