Never Hungry

If you share you will always have something to eat.

On a mission trip to Haiti a church group from the US asked their Haitian host pastor how it is that people there eat when there appears to be so little for so many. He told them this Haitian proverb, “If a person has a cow and he wants to eat well, he cuts the cow into many pieces and gives the pieces to as many people as possible in the community. This assures him that he will eat.”

This didn’t make sense to the Americans. “What do you mean?” they asked. “Aren’t you just giving away your food?”

“Ah,” said the Haitian pastor, “what you share in faith and generosity always comes back to you. If you take your cow and freeze it only for yourself, you will soon become hungry when the food is gone. If you share, you will always have something to eat from someone else who shares with you when your food is gone, and will never become hungry.”

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:24,25).

PRAYER: It doesn’t seem logical, Lord, that by giving away I would receive. Yet I believe that this is yet another paradox of your promises, and that you keep your word. Move my heart to convince me that I will always have plenty when I trust your promises and share what you give to me. Make me generous and willing to help those who appreciate my effort and those who aren’t even aware of it, thanking you for your blessings by giving them away as a blessing to others. Amen.
