It's Just Not Logical

From the George Carlin file.

“Why is a man who invests all your money called a broker?”

“If FedEx and UPS were to merge, would they call it FED UP?”

“If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners depressed?”

Sometimes, things are just not logical.  By George, it doesn’t always follow and we can’t explain why.  That’s just the way it is.

That’s easy to accept when the consequence is of little significance.  But what about more meaningful matters and life’s biggest questions?  Why does God allow terrorists to carry out their wicked schemes?  Who will care for my family when I’m gone?  Could there possibly be a relationship waiting for me somewhere or should I just give up on love?

There are God’s answers, and then there are logical answers that completely make sense.  Humans who crave security by clinging to control can’t stand not understanding, so we opt for the logical.  It feels so right, but it may very well be wrong because all along God had better plans we just couldn’t comprehend.  And we shouldn’t have tried.

The Israelite army thought David the shepherd boy would be easy prey for Goliath.  The wicked conspirators thought Daniel would be eaten alive by the lions.  The disciples thought they’d never see their dead Master again.  Not to be.  And not logical.

“Faith is being certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).  That doesn’t mean faith blindly follows.  It means faith closes its eyes to human limitations and opens them up to the certainty of God’s illogical assurances.

PRAYER:  When this world doesn’t make sense to me, all knowing God, make me trust that you have everything figured out.  When your explanations to my concerns don’t quite satisfy my curiosity, all loving God, make me secure in your blanket promises.  When I look for tomorrow and see only a horizon, all present God, make me aware that you will never leave me alone.  Amen.
