"I Think I Lost My Faith!"

Ever lose your sunglasses, only to have someone tell you they're on top of your head?

Ever lose your sunglasses, only to have someone tell you they’re on top of your head? Or how about losing an important document, only to find it right in the place you had placed it so that you could retrieve it easily? Well then, were the sunglasses and the document ever really lost in the first place, if they were right where they were supposed to be? It would seem they weren’t.

This also holds true for Christians who come to the conclusion that they have lost their faith in God. While it can happen that a person loses his or her faith, it just doesn’t happen to the person who is concerned about it. The very concern itself indicates the presence of saving faith – an interest in God, a hunger for his help, an admission of weakness, a need for his promises.

The faith of a person who has such a concern is always kept in a safe place, and perhaps the person doesn’t realize it at the moment. That safe place is in the hands of God himself. “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed,” Jesus teaches (John 20:29), reminding us that we won’t always fully see, understand, or be in control of what we believe. But our faith is still alive and well nonetheless when our faith has a concern about being lost.

If you think you’ve lost your faith, simply stop looking. And keep believing. Then you’ll realize soon enough that your faith is right where it is supposed to be.

PRAYER: O protector of my soul and guardian of my faith, Lord Jesus Christ, you are my ever present help and Good Shepherd. At times I drift in my faith, lose hope, and become concerned that I am no longer yours. Comfort my spirit in such times of trouble with your firm promises and faithful presence. Still my fears and lead me back to your Word of truth. Help me grow in my faith and Christian living, and take me with you into tomorrow and eternity. Amen.
