Here He Comes Again

Return that shirt that doesn't fit and make it right!

Returns. A sweater that doesn’t fit. A DVD movie that skips. A desk chair that won’t swivel. Here you go again, back to the store, this time to the customer service counter. And you’re going to make it right.

“Why do you stand here looking into the sky?” the angel questioned Jesus’ disciples as they watched him disappear up into the clouds. “This same Jesus … will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Jesus will return. He came here once in humility to be born here and live here and be crucified here for our sins. Although he is now invisibly everywhere, he is physically in heaven from where he will physically come back here again.

That’s why we sometimes refer to it as Christ’s “second coming.” His return will make things right with a finality that offers no more returns, no second chances, no extended due date. He will return here not to stay here but to take all believers to live with him in heaven forever. He will return not in humility but with power and great glory. To make everything right.

PRAYER: When you do return, Lord Jesus, I pray that I will be ready to leave this world and everything in it behind. While I am here, I want to enjoy the blessings of this world but not attach myself to them as objects of my greatest devotion. Help me, Jesus, to stay alert, to watch the sky for your return, and to live each day as if tomorrow you are returning. And give me opportunities to help others get ready for your return by my words of encouragement and life of Christian behavior. Amen.
